Bring AI to your business with NAS

While I was investigating the amount of data being generated every minute back in 2017, Domo.com stated that 90% of the data in the world has been created in the last two years alone. This year “Data Never Sleeps 6.0” has estimated that by 2020 every person on earth will create 1.7 MB of data every second, that is, 12 PB per second in total. This is why worldwide spending on AI and cognitive systems will reach $77.6 billion in 2022, according to an IDC forecast. Businesses have to rely on AI services to help with data categorization.

Various public cloud services provide AI services, such as image labeling, speech-to-text transcription, and natural language understanding. They leverage the computing power in data centers as AI modules need to process millions of files. You choose public cloud services to help you deal with these massive amount of data, and your data will be used to train AI modules from the service provider. Business confidentiality and personal privacy may be sacrificed for a better experience.

Synology Moments

Synology Moments is our first step towards embedding a deep learning module into an on-premises solution. In Moments, your photos will be well categorized by face, location, or subject, and this greatly alleviates the time you would spend on identifying one photo at a time. Categorization in Moments is based on a well-trained engine embedded in Synology NAS, and no data will be transferred out of the box.

Team AI

The team has been working on the deep learning module and tested it using private storage solutions. During this development period, the team worked closely with professors in the computer science field, and this has accelerated the development process. Moments has been available for more than a year, and there are more than 100,000 NAS servers using Synology Moments. The team will not stop developing the technology. Deep learning modules will be further applied to different services, such as Surveillance Station, MailPlus, and even the internal system for support engineers.

AI is the only viable solution currently available to handle this massive data growth. Data intelligence becomes more and more important as this would help businesses with the proper use of internal data to analyze their own operation or workforce for a better decision-making process. We will continue to develop the technology to better safeguard our users’ data governance and personal privacy.
