If you’re looking to the cloud as a way to reduce your storage costs, you’re certainly not alone. With data volumes continuing their stratospheric surge (23% CAGR according to IDC¹), many organizations are interested in leveraging low-cost storage in the public cloud to improve efficiencies. From replicating on-premises backup data to the cloud, tiering data to the cloud and protecting workloads in the cloud, there are some great opportunities to leverage the economies of scale that public cloud providers have to offer.
To really maximize the return on cloud data protection, however, it pays to invest in solutions that can significantly reduce the consumption of public cloud resources.
Recently, we worked with Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) to run a series of pricing models comparing Dell EMC PowerProtect Data Manager (Data Manager) and PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (DDVE), against four competing data protection offerings. Each data protection solution was run across AWS, Azure and GCP to determine which offering provides the greatest cloud resource efficiencies as measured by storage and CPU consumption.
The results revealed that Data Manager and DDVE significantly reduce data protection costs across all three hyperscale cloud environments when compared to competitive offerings.
According to the report, titled Understanding the Economics of In-cloud Data Protection: A Dell Technologies Data Protection Solution Designed with Cost Optimization in Mind:
“ESG validated the many benefits of the Data Manager with DDVE solution for public cloud IaaS environments by reviewing data protection architecture requirements, analyzing capacity utilization capabilities, and auditing detailed pricing data with a competitive comparison focus. ESG’s modeled scenario shows a drop of more than 80% in cost to protect data in the cloud using the Dell Technologies solution.”
The chart below illustrates the efficiencies of the Dell Technologies solution across three different data protection resources: server compute, block storage and object storage.
In aggregate, the Dell Technologies solution is between 2-5x more efficient than competitive offerings across all three public cloud provider environments. It’s important to keep in mind that these efficiencies can be realized not only in the public cloud but anywhere your data resides – on-premises, at the edge and, of course, across multi-cloud infrastructure.
What’s more, Dell Technologies data protection solutions are transactable in the AWS, Azure and GCP marketplace environments, simplifying the purchase and deployment of data protection in the public cloud so you can accelerate your business outcomes.
As the number one provider of cloud data protection solutions² with over 7 exabytes³ of data protected in the public cloud, we continue to help our customers drive the cloud efficiency, simplicity and agility they need to move their businesses forward into the data decade.
