From AI to the Cloud – HGST and What’s Hot at 2017 NAB

Media. Entertainment. Technology. 2017 NAB is going to be all about the intersection of these three fields and their impact on the industry.  So what’s going to be the hottest topics at the show and what can you expect from HGST? Here’s my top list:

What’s Hot at 2017 NAB

Last month’s Virtual NAB Innovation Conference gave me a sneak peak into the emerging technologies that are disrupting the industry and prevalent at NAB. Here’s what’s going to be hot at 2017 NAB:

1. Cloud – Real Workloads

A set of mature products has finally reached the market and with them a fundamental shift in how studios approach large scale rendering workloads. The Cloud is no longer a question of ‘if’, but rather of ‘how’ and 2017 NAB will be a hotspot of best practices of everything from cloud security, to hybrid workflows and multi-cloud implementation.

2. AI and Machine Learning – Tame That Data!

Online streaming services know everything about their audience and how they consume their content. Now Hollywood is figuring out how to catch up. Entertainment decisions are qualitative. Filmmakers and writers want to know what will appeal to their audience, and everyone is looking for quantitative data that can deliver those insights.

3. Virtual and Augmented Reality – Beyond the Hype

AR and VR are a whole new stage that is booming, opening up new opportunities for users and businesses alike. Everyone wants to understand it. Is this the next 3D or just a hype cycle? Personally, I think it’s very real, and you should expect to see it permeate every corner of NAB.

Redefining Storage for Media and Entertainment

From ingest to data archiving, storage is the backbone of the media industry. We are the largest storage solutions company [1], with 60 years of design know-how and trusted supply. The storage industry is undergoing major changes, and for media & entertainment there are several technologies that are proliferating the market and defining where the industry is headed. Here is what you need to know:

1. Flash Forward

If you’re not on board the flash train yet, I’m not even sure how you get your workloads done! The industry is moving towards very high performance requirements with 4K, 8K, VR and AI. Flash is the enabler of these new workloads with extreme performance, fast access and lower costs through hardware consolidation.  If you want to achieve the best ROI for your flash tier, make sure to come talk with us and learn how to best implement flash in your infrastructure.

2. Hybrid Redefined

The cloud opened up a new frontier for scalability (of CPU & GPU’s), DR and rendering possibilities. However, when dealing with massive capacity, its recurring cost structure can get expensive (and media & entertainment have a petascale problem…). You’ll also find yourself with vendor lock-in and huge egress fees when you need data out. Hybrid cloud models enable a best of both worlds solution – the savings of fixed assets and the ability to burst for compute and storage needs. Come to our booth to learn how you can deploy the best hybrid cloud model and access your content, any size, anywhere.

3. Object for Everyone!

Unlike cold or near line storage, Object Storage gives you access to your data promptly, opening great new opportunities for data at your fingertips. However, most object installations are complex; require 6-9 months to complete and a lot of engineers to implement. But the ActiveScaleTM P100 system changes that with a turnkey solution that’s simple to deploy, easy to scale and delivers better cost efficiencies than the public cloud or even tape! With fifteen nine’s of reliability, you won’t find a safer way to store your data.
