How Axians ICT Austria scaled its services globally with Lenovo TruScale Infrastructure as a Service

With clients spanning sectors from logistics to equipment manufacturing, Axians ICT Austria is a leading IT service provider based in Linz, the country’s third largest city. The company, part of the larger Axians Group, has extensive expertise in delivering digital transformation for local businesses, ranging from small businesses to large organizations with international ambitions.

Over the years, the company’s focus has moved from workstations towards data centers. With more than 500 experts across six locations in Austria, Axians supports its customers in modernizing their digital infrastructures and solutions. Whether applications or data analytics, corporate networks, shared workspaces, data centres, cloud solutions or internet security – Axians is a specialist in all the latest information and communication technologies.

However, the company faced a challenge in providing high-quality managed services to larger international clients, which required remote deployments outside Europe. It lacked the necessary global logistics, delivery, and maintenance capabilities to support their services in distant locations. the company faced a challenge in providing high-quality managed services to larger international clients, which required remote deployments outside Europe. It lacked the necessary global logistics, delivery, and maintenance capabilities to support their services in distant locations.

The Axians ICT Austria team turned to Lenovo, given their two-decade partnership and status as a Lenovo Data Center Platinum Partner. Over the years, Axians ICT Austria has built a strong foundation with Lenovo, and one of its key growth areas is the vPack Managed Private Cloud, a customized full-service solution that runs on Lenovo hardware. The company’s long history of collaboration and Lenovo’s proven expertise made it the ideal partner to support the continued expansion of Axians ICT Austria’s managed cloud services.

Peter Rossner, Solution Sales vPack, Axians ICT Austria, said, “Our core business is domestic, so we are not customs experts. Our larger customers often need IT infrastructure at their international offices and production facilities worldwide. To support their global expansion and reach, we wanted to find a way to offer our streamlined service with a single point of contact, without geographical limitations.”

A natural fit

Speaking to Lenovo, Axians ICT Austria realized that Lenovo’s globe-spanning scale made it the perfect partner to add geographic coverage and enhanced scalability to the vPack Managed Private Cloud solution. The vPack Managed Private Cloud solution already relied on Lenovo infrastructure and services, with Lenovo ThinkAgile VX Certified Nodes and Lenovo ThinkSystem SR650 V3 servers with VMware Cloud Foundation software. These are installed either at customer sites or at one of three colocation data centers in Vienna, with installations mostly requiring two to four nodes, and up to eight nodes in exceptional cases for larger workloads.

Axians ICT Austria always adds a management node to remotely monitor and manage systems using Lenovo XClarity, which enables technicians to manage systems and keep software updated. By shifting to Lenovo TruScale Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Axians ICT Austria could entrust paperwork, delivery, logistics and implementation to Lenovo, delivering more complete managed services to customers worldwide.

Rossner said, “‘I want to have my data in-house,’ is a sentence that I hear very often from customers. The solution is located directly at the customer’s site and is managed remotely by us. Our larger customers often need IT infrastructure at their international offices and production facilities worldwide. Our goal was to scale out our solution to help our customers grow, without adding complexity to their mission-critical IT infrastructure services.”

Linda Yao, VP Hybrid Cloud and AI Solutions at Lenovo said, “Lenovo operates in 180 countries, so our international expertise and global logistics and support were a perfect fit for Axians ICT Austria.  With Lenovo TruScale IaaS, Axians ICT Austria can provide customers with scalability, cost-efficiency, and a simplified IT management experience – enabling their teams to focus on innovation and strategic growth without worrying about incremental capital investments.”

Global results

With Lenovo TruScale’s flexible monthly billing, Axians ICT Austria’s customers can focus on their core businesses, with the reassurance that Lenovo’s fast and seamless support enables cost-efficient global deployments and maintenance, while also achieving up to 50% lower energy consumption. This substantial reduction in energy usage not only cuts operational costs but also helps customers in their efforts to meet their ESG goals. For customers who are expanding worldwide, the solution streamlines global IT deployments, potentially unlocking even bigger savings because organizations no longer need to work with multiple vendors and service providers.

Peter Rossner, Solution Sales vPack, Axians ICT Austria, said, “By integrating Lenovo TruScale IaaS into our vPack Managed Private Cloud solution, businesses can simplify their global IT landscapes. It’s a huge benefit for us and our customers to take advantage of Lenovo’s expertise and operational excellence in combination with its global supply chain and logistics.”

A foundation for growth

The Lenovo TruScale IaaS solution has enabled Axians ICT Austria to set its sights higher, hoping to win new customers that might have previously been out of reach. By leveraging Lenovo’s global capabilities, Axians ICT Austria can now deploy IT solutions in regions that were previously logistically challenging, all while maintaining the same high standards of service. The company now aims to encourage its existing customers to standardize global infrastructure with its vPack Managed Private Cloud solution and is expanding its business with new ideas based on Lenovo technology, such as backup services like Lenovo TS4300 Tape Library to increase resiliency against ransomware attacks. This diversification enhances their service portfolio, catering to emerging customer needs such as cybersecurity and data protection.

Peter Rossner, Solution Sales vPack at Axians ICT Austria, says: “By leveraging Lenovo’s flexible channel partner offerings and global capabilities, we can now offer more powerful and attractive solutions to our customers, strengthening our own position in the market. And with Lenovo TruScale IaaS, we can finally provide comprehensive managed services for more advanced and distributed business needs.”
