IBM ThinkPad X40 Wins eWEEK Excellence Award

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., April 18, 2005 – IBM announced today that eWEEK has named the ThinkPad X40 notebook a winner in eWEEK’s Fifth Annual Excellence Awards program, in the desktop and mobile hardware category.

“The opportunities created by new technology, and by customers’ interest in new ways of using those tools to do business, are confronting new challenges of security and manageability,” said eWEEK Editor-In-Chief Eric Lundquist. “We take pride in offering eWEEK’s readers recommendations for products that respond to these complex and dynamic demands.”

The ThinkPad X40 notebook, which also earned an eWEEK Analyst’s Choice Award in tests, is the second consecutive ThinkPad notebook to win this category. As one judge said, “The X40 exemplifies what we’ve come to expect from IBM.”

ThinkPad X40 ThinkVantage Technologies were cited in eWEEK’s Excellence Award for the ThinkPad X40, including the Active Protection System, which arms notebooks with air-bag like hard-disk crash protection in case of a fall and Rescue and Recovery, which can restore lost data, applications and settings in the event of a software failure, even if the main operating system isn’t working. The notebook’s small footprint, light weight, extended battery life, full-size keyboard and choice of wireless technologies were also cited.

The eWEEK Excellence Awards program provides enterprise IT professionals with a benchmark for assessing a wide range of technology products and services. Evaluating the entries this year was a panel of experts including eWEEK Labs analysts and eWEEK Corporate Partners, providing a mix of technical and real-world analysis.

Winners will be honored at a special ceremony on April 26, 2005, at The Westin Copley Place in Boston, Mass. All of the winning products in this year’s program were announced in a special report appearing in the April 11 issue of eWEEK and at www.eweek.com .
