With a long history stretching back to a pioneering beginning trading textiles and agricultural products in Makassar in 1952, KALLA has grown to become among Indonesia’s largest business groups. The operations of KALLA now span 15 different sectors, from manufacturing to construction to automotive and real estate. Technology is the ‘glue’ that holds the various parts of KALLA together. When it was time for an IT refresh, KALLA turned to Lenovo for help.
KALLA has big ambitions. By the group’s 100th anniversary in 2052, KALLA aims to be in the top ranks of the Asia Pacific Fortune 1000 and to operate as a more environmentally responsible business. Leaders at KALLA were also keen to shift from a capital expenditure model (CapEx) in IT, towards an operational expenditure (OpEx) model. KALLA turned to Lenovo along with Lenovo Platinum partner and trusted tech leader Elextra Komputer, to help.
Disa R. Novianty, People & Culture Director, KALLA, said, ‘We hoped changing investment from CapEx would help us to plan more flexibly and be agile. Our other considerations included reducing electronic waste disposal, cost efficiency and improving maintenance.’
A new model
Previously, KALLA had relied on a traditional procurement model to source IT hardware. Facing challenges ranging from maintenance issues to finding the ‘right’ devices for different roles, KALLA decided to look for a different way to roll out desktop and laptop PCs to its employees.
Disa R. Novianty said, “We could see how purchasing hardware outright was starting to hold our business back. Buying hardware was time-consuming as we needed to make sure we were sourcing the right equipment for each team, not to mention deploying, maintaining, and disposing of it all properly.”
A new way to deliver
Teams across Lenovo, Elextra and KALLA worked closely to understand Kalla’s goals and needs. Elextra Komputer was able to show leaders at KALLA how switching to Lenovo TruScale Device as a Service (DaaS) could cut costs, while also offering additional benefits such as Lenovo’s managed services and security solutions. Elextra Komputer is a Lenovo Platinum Partner and uses the Lenovo 360 for TruScale go-to-market framework to deliver solutions tailored to the needs of customers. The Lenovo TruScale DaaS solution was built around KALLA’s needs, including Thinkpad E14, T14 and Xl laptops, ThinkCentre Neo desktops and ThinkVision monitors.
Elextra connected KALLA to experts at Lenovo, who mapped out a detailed plan to transform KALLA’s IT procurement, based on Lenovo TruScale Device as a Service, part of Lenovo Digital Workplace Solutions (DWS). This meant that KALLA could gain access to the managed services that are part of Lenovo DWS, alongside security services and Lenovo Premier Support Plus, plus end-of-life data erasure services. Elextra also worked with Rentalworks, a local leasing partner and part of the Lenovo Global Financial Services (LGFS) ecosystem to create a flexible usage-based payment structure that offered KALLA the freedom to pay for devices over time.
Disa R. Novianty said, “From the outset, Lenovo was committed to understanding our challenges and helping us shape a solution that met our needs. The team flew out to our headquarters for multiple presentations and face-to-face meetings. We’ve also had a great experience with Lenovo’s deployment and support teams.”
Delivering results
The company rolled out hundreds of laptops and desktops to employees, and the results were rapid and measurable. Device repairs were completed within 24 hours, whereas they had previously taken days. Across the group, the change delivered a welcome financial boost, with total cost savings of between 10 and 12%, and the device-as-a-service approach minimized e-waste in line with KALLA’s ESG goals.
Abdul Hakim, Executive Director, Digital Workplace Solutions at Lenovo says, “At Lenovo, we go beyond delivering technology—we align with our clients’ strategic objectives. With KALLA, our Lenovo TruScale DaaS solution enabled a shift from CapEx to OpEx, driving financial agility, 10-12% cost savings, and 24-hour repairs. This partnership not only improved operational efficiency but also supported Kalla’s ESG goals by reducing e-waste. Together with Elextra Komputer and Rentalworks, we’ve built a solid IT foundation, positioning KALLA for sustainable growth and long-term success.”
Ambitions for the future
KALLA is committed to providing Lenovo laptops and desktops to its employees. Moving the IT budget from a capital expenditure to an as-a-service model also put KALLA in a stronger financial position. The group believes the Lenovo TruScale DaaS model can be a key driver of future growth.
Disa R. Novianty said, “Lenovo TruScale DaaS gives our business a more predictable payment model, and is helping us advance our sustainability goals. TruScale DaaS had a positive impact on the company’s cash flow: this means the company can explore opportunities for future business development.”
