As a global technology leader, Lenovo is driving business sustainability in all our operations. We implement our commitment to sustainability through all channels possible, from product design and user experience all the way down to our packaging. Details of all our sustainable practices and achievements can be found in Lenovo’s 2022 ESG Report.
We are proud to announce our partnership with AT&T who will provide our CO2 Offset Service with every ThinkPad X13s 5G sold. Our groundbreaking service is one of the first of its kind in the industry — offering customers the chance to purchase their PC products’ CO2 compensated over the device’s lifecycle. Lenovo’s C02 Offset Service has been validated by DEKRA, an international testing, inspection and certification organization.
Carbon offsetting funds projects around the world, helping reduce carbon emissions by a measurable and verifiable amount. Lenovo’s CO2 compensation evaluation is based off a realistic emission by product, and covers the production, shipment and average lifecycle. Some of Lenovo’s projects include:
- Wind Initiative in Chile: This project increases the participation of renewable energy in Chile, promotes renewable technology that diversifies the Chilean energy sources, and contributes to the mitigation of climate change.
- Biomass Initiative in China: Rice straw, wheat straw, and wood residues are used as fuel for power generation. The project achieves emission reductions by avoiding CO2 emissions from electricity generated by traditional fossil-fuel fired power plants.
- Wind Initiative in Mexico: The project activity generates renewable electric energy in Mexico through the construction and operation of a 90 MW wind farm in the municipality of Unión Hidalgo, Oaxaca State. The project reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to a business-as-usual scenario by displacing fossil-fuel based electricity. In addition, it reduces other pollutants (CO, NOx, SO2) resulting from the power generation industry in Mexico.
Lenovo WW has partnered with ClimeCo for the past few years to provide our offset service. They are the largest producer of US voluntary carbon credits under the Climate Action Reserve and have been named Project Development of the Year by the Climate Action Reserve in 2015,2017 and 2018.
How it works
Our Carbon Offset Service is incredibly easy to use. Customers can choose this option when they order eligible devices from Lenovo. Once the products ship, Lenovo reports the transaction and issues a unique certification with a specific HW Serial Number to their Official CO2 offset partner.
For every ThinkPad X13s sold from AT&T there is a built-in 0.5 ton CO2 offset. Lenovo will publish product-specific Carbon Footprint under an ECO Declaration to ensure the offset becomes part of the AT&T products’ Build of Material. Lenovo then provides compensated series number data to our offset partners and our warranty entitlement database shows CO2 compensation on the serial number.
The ThinkPad X13s is available at AT&T beginning September 2, 2022.
Why you should do it
The biggest draw for this service is how easy it is to use. The service is already included in your hardware transaction and gives users a seamless way to reduce their global carbon footprint. The program proactively supports CO2 emission reduction through several projects across the globe.
